I know, I know. I have been MIA for about a month. Trust me I have a good excuse. I have been busy, extremely busy. I am currently sitting in a hotel in Warren Ohio rehydrating from a long hot day on the range participating in a Critical Defensive Handgun course put on by Safety Solutions Academy. Two weeks before this I was rolling around in the red Missouri dirt with Defensive Engagement Concepts in their Tac 2 pistol. I have taken tons of notes and have a lot of new concepts to use for topics later on. Obviously I will be doing an after action report for these classes as soon as I can get a breather. Unfortunately for the blog and my readers I will be back in a 3 day course in a little over a week then back to being the instructor instead of the student.

Long story short I am still alive and I have lived on a range nearly every weekend…. AND I LOVE IT. I am gaining more stuff to bring to the blog and to Valkyrie Defense Group. I am going to try to focus a little more on getting content out because we have picked up a few more readers from a lot of the VDG classes and I know they would like to hear more from me. (They told me.)

I hope you all have gotten out and got your fingers on some triggers and used the time you spend on the range effectively.

Over the weekend we had yet another Concealed Handgun Class and we were covering the subject of cleaning your handgun. We usually snicker when we read the NRA suggestion of cleaning after every time you shoot your gun. The instructors that help us at Valkyrie Defense Group are all guilty of going pretty long durations before our guns get anymore than just a wipe down. Let’s face it if I cleaned my guns every time I fired them my son would probably not know who I am. One reason I love instructing is when I am talking or answering questions sometimes I will have a little epiphany or in this situation a realization and when I do I try to make a mental note to come back here to share.

Yesterday talking about cleaning it hit me that I never carry a “clean” gun. I have this weird habit of when I clean any of my carry guns I will not feel right carrying it until I have shot a magazine through it to perform a function test. I want to be absolutely sure that the gun was put back together properly before I want to depend my life on it. The last thing I want is to clean my gun and head out into a situation where I need to defend my life with it and get a click instead of a bang in that critical moment. The new R51 is a gun that has me thinking this needs to be considered more and more for people.

When you re-assemble the R51 you must slip a small tab on the slide stop of the gun underneath this little spring. You must insert it perfectly parallel to the slide. If you tilt the slide stop upwards by as little as a 1/16th of an inch, if it rides above the spring, the gun will malfunction.

Just to make sure I’m not just picking on the R51, my Ruger LCP requires the recoil spring to be replaced a certain way. If not it will fail to eject on nearly every shot.

How about you? Have you ever thought about function testing your gun before you depend your life on it? Head over to the Facebook page and let me know if this is something that has ever crossed your mind or if you do something similar. While you are there make sure you give me a like to keep up to date on all the pictures of some of the projects I’m working on.

I put up a review not too long ago on Liberty Civil Defense 50gr. personal protection rounds I had tested and started carrying. There is still a bit of push back from people thinking these rounds are nothing but hype. But even with all the naysayers Liberty seems to be picking up followers. Recently The National Tactical Officers Association gave Liberty 9mm the highest score they offer. With this rating Liberty now has the ….um…. liberty to use the gold NTOA logo in their marketing.

NTOA_MT_GOLD_LOGO

I searched the internet high and low for the actual test but I couldn’t find it anywhere. The best I could come up with was the Ammoland Blog. Ammoland goes onto say how the testing officer was impressed with the low felt recoil and accuracy. My favorite quote from the test sounded remarkably like something I might have said before….

“….. I believe that lead free bullets and ammunition are the future and as bullet  technology advances; it’s only going to get better. Liberty Ammunition is  certainly in the forefront of that movement.”

I still am carrying Liberty everyday and don’t think twice about it. I ran a mag through the new Vtac and you can find that over on Valkyrie Defense Group’s Facebook as the profile picture. All I can say is holy muzzle flash!!

I don’t normally give reviews of products unless I have used them for a minimum of three months. There are a few products I have been testing and taking notes on for over a year now just to make sure I can give an honest and complete review but this product I bought just before Christmas for myself and a few friends and couldn’t wait to write a review for you guys and gals.

The T.A.S.K or Tactical Ass Scrubbing Kit is the only personal hygiene product on the market I have found. Constructed of anti-microbial mesh and available in two colors, Black or Tan, the T.A.S.K can be used with solid bars like Dove Men (because I am a Man.) or liquid soap. Ladies don’t feel left out, according to Fight or Flight Tactical website

Gals:  It exfoliates to reveal a newer, softer you, and works with your favorite beauty bar.  The mesh’s antimicrobial fibers also prevents bacterial growth, so there’s no lingering ikkiness.

That is cute. Wonder what they say about guys?

Guys: It scrubs off the grime and stank, and even uses your leftover soap slivers. Wash away the blood of your enemies, making you smell and look better as you hear the lamentation of their women.

The T.A.S.K. does have a short break in period which is one of the downfalls I could find. By break in period I mean it takes a few uses to soften it up a little. Just claiming that they come a little stiff is a little understatement. Don’t be surprised if while washing off the blood of your enemies you also wash away a layer or two of your skin. The other down fall I found was the 6″ piece of webbing could be just a tad bit longer so I could get it around the hot or cold water knobs in the shower. Other than those two changes I think this is a well thought out product.

If you have any of your tactical loving brethren with a birthday or gift giving holiday coming up, or if you have one that nobody wants to stack up with on a door breach because the only abusive thing about them isn’t their language,  these make a great inexpensive little gift.  If you are interested in finding one you can pick them up from Fight and Flight Tactical here. If you are interested in more reviews that I have done you can find them under the “Reviews” tab above.

Back in November there was a big announcement made that didn’t make much headlines but got me pretty excited. If you follow the Absolute BS or Valkyrie Defense Group on Facebook then you probably have seen plenty of photos of me on the range sporting 5.11 Taclite Pro pants. At the risk of sounding looking and sounding like the Tacticool fan boy they by far they are the most comfortable pants I own. I generally wear them between training on the range, working in the woods cutting timber, hinting, and even while teaching. Not once have the pants let me down.

So knowing I have had such great luck with my 5.11 pants it should be no surprise that I was excited to see the joining of 5.11 with NASCAR. I usually attend at least one NASCAR race each year. (There is nothing like Bristol under the lights!!!) With this new partnership 5.11 will be utilizing their cutting edge designs and durability to design the new uniform the NASCAR Officials.

Jim O’Connell, NASCAR chief sales officer had this to say about the partnership,

“The hard-working men and women that are tasked with officiating nearly 200 NASCAR sanctioned races each year should be outfitted with uniforms that ensure optimum performance and comfort throughout the demanding 10-month race season… 5.11 Tactical has proven to be a leader in developing tactical apparel and we are proud to add yet another brand to our family of Official Partners this year.”

5.11 is now in the process of designing a complete NASCAR line of apparel and will have all their tactical (or tacticool) line on display at each NASCAR event. I am kind of excited what 5.11 rolls out and how it will transfer over into the tactical line.

Again be sure to like the Facebook page and join all the fun.

Needless to say I have been pretty excited about the new Glock models that are supposed to be coming out around January. I am so excited that I have placed an order for the G42 without even knowing what it is. It seems a little crazy but I am rolling the dice a bit. Again I am thinking the G42 will be the single stack 9mm in direct competition with the S&W Shield. I have nothing against the Shield, my wife owns one and I sometimes carry it, but I am a Glock shooter.

Today we might have gotten a little closer to finding out what the new models are. If you remember correctly I guessed that there would be an optics ready fill size model to compete directly with the S&W CORE and the FNX-45…. well I am happy to say that I am a little closer to being right. Sportsman Depot may have jumped the gun a little bit and listed a Glock 41 in their “new items” section. The description they have is as follows…

GLOCK 41 GEN 4 45ACP 5.3 AS 13RD GLOCK

I am going out on a limb here but I am betting Glock isn’t too happy that one of their disturbers ousted them. So incase Glock makes the pull it here is a screen shot of the page….

glock 41-1

If you haven’t heard by now there has been an odd cryptic ad going around supposedly by Glock. Here is the ad….

glock-g42

The G42 is the first weird thing for me. Glock models go in order starting at the G17 (which was actually the 17th design the company came up with but was the 1st to make it to the market) and so on up to the Glock 39 this leaves a couple spots open if they are sticking to their numerical system.

I have talked to a few people, and they are telling me what very little their Glock reps are saying, but it sounds like we are in for at least two new models. There is a lot of speculation out there. People are guessing everything from a full on Glock Carbine to a full size 22lr trainer handgun. There is a big camp that thinks it will be a 380 version since there has been import restriction on the G25 and G28 here in the US. The reason I am skeptical on the 380 idea is because those two pistols already have a spot in the numerical line I don’t see Glock reserving two more model numbers for the same pistols. And the 380 was sooo three years ago. (Except for Ruger last year who in spite of everyone else showing up with single stack 9mm’s they crashed the party with the LC380.)

Now here is where I get to give you your moneys worth and tell you what I think is going to happen. At SHOT Show last year I was extremely disappointed with Glock for not introducing a new single stack 9mm. I actually put my full displeasure out there to one of the booth workers and had a pretty good conversation with him. Knowing what he told me and considering the fact that S&W has the Shield and Springfield has the XDs I am betting on a single stacked 9mm to be making it’s debut at SHOT this year. This is my final answer. All signs point to single stack 9 for me and I’m pretty pumped about it. I am tired of enjoying my wife’s Shield so much and having to lower my standards to a Smith & Wesson when I want to carry a thin gun.

I said above that this there is more than likely two new models coming out didn’t I? Well, the single stack 9 is my educated guess pick so I I will give you one guess from left field. I think the second new guns is going to be some sort of optics ready handgun. We saw it last year with the FNX-45 Tactical and now the M&P Core I think Glock is looking towards the future of what defensive handguns might be. Keep in mind also Outdoor Channel’s show Shooting Gallery just got finished filming a show called “Zero to Hero” with trainer Gabe Suarez using all Glocks with red dots mounted on them I think this guess is out there but not too unreasonable.

For my third and final trick I give you the Glock G99…..

Hey we can always speculate right? What do you think Glock is going to unveil at SHOT this year? Let me know in the comments below.
