I know, I know. I have been MIA for about a month. Trust me I have a good excuse. I have been busy, extremely busy. I am currently sitting in a hotel in Warren Ohio rehydrating from a long hot day on the range participating in a Critical Defensive Handgun course put on by Safety Solutions Academy. Two weeks before this I was rolling around in the red Missouri dirt with Defensive Engagement Concepts in their Tac 2 pistol. I have taken tons of notes and have a lot of new concepts to use for topics later on. Obviously I will be doing an after action report for these classes as soon as I can get a breather. Unfortunately for the blog and my readers I will be back in a 3 day course in a little over a week then back to being the instructor instead of the student.

Long story short I am still alive and I have lived on a range nearly every weekend…. AND I LOVE IT. I am gaining more stuff to bring to the blog and to Valkyrie Defense Group. I am going to try to focus a little more on getting content out because we have picked up a few more readers from a lot of the VDG classes and I know they would like to hear more from me. (They told me.)

I hope you all have gotten out and got your fingers on some triggers and used the time you spend on the range effectively.

While I’m excited about  Hodgdon’s new reloading data center I don’t think it has all the data I’ll ever need but they are giving it a valiant effort.

Hodgdon removed their very outdated load data center and recently replaced it with a new format that is extra user friendly.

What I really like about the new layout is how well it works with a mobile device. So now when I’m standing in the reloading aisle at the gun store I can quickly find a powder that will work well with what I’m trying to do.

I still would like to see them add more bullet varieties but this will do for now.

You can check it out on Hodgon’s website and let me know what you think.

Who remembers the instructor from Lancaster Ohio who cracked one off in the class room while demonstrating how you don’t have to remove a revolver from a purse to fire it? Well, he made the news again today. It was actually good news for him and some pretty shitty news for every other NRA instructor out there. Good news for him is that he didn’t get charged with a felony for winging a student. Bad news for us because every time you identify yourself as a NRA instructor you are automatically synonymous with this asshole.

I have to give him credit though, every student in that class will never forget that a revolver will shoot through a purse.

If you are in the market for safe and knowledgeable instruction check us out at Valkyrie Defense Group. You can find us online or on Facebook. Like our page to keep up to date on our rapidly growing training schedule. While on Facebook swing by and give the blog a like too. I would really appreciate it.

Question of the day, have you ever witnessed an instructor do something incredibly stupid or give some horrible advice? Let me know on Facebook or in the comments section below.

This must be the week of elitist tools in the news. Let’s face it, anytime Mark Kelly comes up in the media it is usually because of some extreme doucheness and today is no exception. Gabby Giffords’ space cadet husband Mark Kelly gave a rousing speech on Feb 6th in front of Oregon’s legislature on…. you guessed it, more gun control.

Mr. Kelly climbed upon his soap box to push H.B. 1551 which would expand background checks on all firearm sales. He urged his support claiming the bill would curb crime like the egregious attack that was committed against his wife in January of 2011. Mark fails to mention that the man behind the gun used on his wife bought his weapon legally and the only thing that could have stopped the attack was a magic crystal ball but no big deal right?  Standard elitist bullshit. BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE!!!!

After entertaining the Oregon Senate the ever hypocritical Mark Kelly went to the Portland Police Bureau Central Precinct Range for some target practice. SAY WUT?!?! Yup you heard me right.

Just to prove it is him in the photo you can check their organizations website here for the fact check. And if that isn’t hypocritical or ironic enough he is seen shooting a Glock 17 in the photos–high capacity magazines and all. (Jared Loughner used a Glock 9mm to shoot Gabby.)

Maybe I am crazy and I am letting this get to me too much? What do you think? Is this even worse than when he bought the AR-15, the very style of rifle that he was on capitol hill lobbying against? Let me know over on the Facebook page or in the comments below.

As I have always said I love to get reader mail. I especially love it when I get a question for a future post. Last week I got a message From Scott. Scott asked:

First, thanks for a solid year of interesting posts. I’m not sure if you shoot much distance, but I think it would be interesting to compare .22lr at a moderate distance to larger center fire cartridges at long distances as a training tool. Does .22 at 200-300M have value as a training tool to shoot .308 at 1,000M?

Thanks for writing in Scott and I will start by saying thanks for sticking around for the first year. I am only hoping it is going to get better. I used to be pretty heavy into long range shooting and it was there where I really found my love for honing skills.

Onto your question, (when you can find it) 22lr makes a great trainer for both rifle and pistol. Since Scott asked about rifle we will stick to that subject. The more you practice the fundamentals the better in my opinion. When I was focusing more on rifles I trained a ton with 22lr and did a lot of dry fire practice. Hold Control, Breath Control, Trigger Control, and my Follow Through is what I would focus on because it is all the same whether you are dry firing, using rim fire, or center fire.

Now does the 22 have a training value for the 308…. I say yes. The 22lr and the 308 do have quite a bit in common when it comes to wind drift.

drift2

When researching I couldn’t find much on the relation to each other when it comes to drop except for this on the Long Range Hunting forum.

based on my experience and #’s through my set ups both 22 and 308 and running through a ballistics calculator that matches my range results, i came up with a drop comparison(22lr zeroed at 50 yards, .308 at 100yards,drop in inches). once again, this best matches my data, your numbers will probably differ:

22lr 40gr. .075bc 1040fps / .308win 165grSST .447bc 2600fps

22lr drop .308
50yds 0 = 100yds
75yds 2.8 = 175yds
100yds 8.3 = 240yds
125yds 17.6 = 315yds
150yds 30.8 = 380yds
175yds 47.3 = 450yds
200yds 68.7 = 510yds
225yds 92.5 = 560yds
250yds 123.9 = 630yds
275yds 158.2 = 690yds
300yds 199.9 = 770yds
325yds 248.8 = 820yds
350yds 304.8 = 880yds
375yds 367.9 = 940yds
400yds 437.6 = 987yds

I will say the downfall to training with the 22 for shooting 308 is obviously going to be lack of recoil but as I said before the solid foundation of fundamentals are still what are building on and the question was is it a good training tool and I still am sticking with it being a great tool.

I put up a review not too long ago on Liberty Civil Defense 50gr. personal protection rounds I had tested and started carrying. There is still a bit of push back from people thinking these rounds are nothing but hype. But even with all the naysayers Liberty seems to be picking up followers. Recently The National Tactical Officers Association gave Liberty 9mm the highest score they offer. With this rating Liberty now has the ….um…. liberty to use the gold NTOA logo in their marketing.

NTOA_MT_GOLD_LOGO

I searched the internet high and low for the actual test but I couldn’t find it anywhere. The best I could come up with was the Ammoland Blog. Ammoland goes onto say how the testing officer was impressed with the low felt recoil and accuracy. My favorite quote from the test sounded remarkably like something I might have said before….

“….. I believe that lead free bullets and ammunition are the future and as bullet  technology advances; it’s only going to get better. Liberty Ammunition is  certainly in the forefront of that movement.”

I still am carrying Liberty everyday and don’t think twice about it. I ran a mag through the new Vtac and you can find that over on Valkyrie Defense Group’s Facebook as the profile picture. All I can say is holy muzzle flash!!

I was going over some of the stats for the year 2013 for the blog and to me they are pretty awesome. Looking back and thinking about how I started the blog as a way to keep in touch with all my friends while I was at SHOT Show and keep them updated on everything I was seeing the blog has grown more and further than I ever dreamed this year. Every day I am reminded why I come home and pound away on the keyboard when I receive the simple new Facebook like or a kind email saying “I love reading everyday keep up the good work.”

I thought it would be fun to share some of the “best of” from Absolute BS in 2013 and share what a small hobby has turned into.

Most read Article was the ATS War belt Review followed by the Suunto Core Review. Amazingly the war belt review comes up as number three in the google search.

The most used search term was obviously ATS war belt but the next in line surprised me a bit. “Magpul leaving Colorado” was the second on the list.

Another huge surprise to me was the number of countries that have managed to find their way to the blog. A grand total of 85 have swung in to see what I have had to say. Leading the pack was of course the USA, followed but our neighbors up north Canada, then it was France, UK, and Germany rounding out the top 5. The latest country to hit the map with one visitor was Moldova.

Referrer websites were pretty predictable with Facebook at the top with most folks clicking over from there. But it was followed by ShootersLegion.com, Strt.us, and Gunbroker.com

The audience is 81% male with 18% female. The age range most attracted is 25-34.

I hope you have enjoyed the last year of second amendment news and firearms related talk. I have a few things planned already for this year. I am working on three pretty large projects now all at once. One is about the proposed changes to Ohio concealed carry laws, the next is one that I started within the last week on my recent change in daily carry platforms, and the last one is a project I thought up that is turning out to be pretty enjoyable. So stay tuned for those in the up coming weeks and months.

I am already planning out my personal training schedule for next year. The first class up is the one I am most excited about and will have a whole write-up about it before and after I go. I don’t want to spoil it so that is all I will say about it for now. There is another class that I am excited about that will help me work on a few skills that I feel I am lacking in and that is hand to hand and knife fighting. That will definitely be a huge learning experience for me.

As for Valkyrie Defense we are growing everyday quicker than we ever thought we would. We are booked solid with classes through the middle of February so anyone in Ohio is reading this and is wanting to take the Ohio Concealed Handgun class or one of our advanced carry classes please don’t wait until the weather breaks, contact us now and reserve your weekend in the spring and summer months now before they are all gone. We are getting all the details worked out with t-shirts, hats, patches, stickers, and vinyl decals as we speak so if you are interested is any of those visit the VDG Facebook page or our website and contact us for more details.

Once again I want to thank everyone for subscribing and liking Absolute BS Blog. I hope to keep the bar set high and bring everyone some laughs and good information throughout 2014. I always love to hear from my readers so if there is any suggestions or topic requests please feel free to use the contact page at the top or send me a message on the Facebook page. I respond to every thing I get so don’t be afraid and think you are bothering me.
