While I’m excited about  Hodgdon’s new reloading data center I don’t think it has all the data I’ll ever need but they are giving it a valiant effort.

Hodgdon removed their very outdated load data center and recently replaced it with a new format that is extra user friendly.

What I really like about the new layout is how well it works with a mobile device. So now when I’m standing in the reloading aisle at the gun store I can quickly find a powder that will work well with what I’m trying to do.

I still would like to see them add more bullet varieties but this will do for now.

You can check it out on Hodgon’s website and let me know what you think.

Who remembers the instructor from Lancaster Ohio who cracked one off in the class room while demonstrating how you don’t have to remove a revolver from a purse to fire it? Well, he made the news again today. It was actually good news for him and some pretty shitty news for every other NRA instructor out there. Good news for him is that he didn’t get charged with a felony for winging a student. Bad news for us because every time you identify yourself as a NRA instructor you are automatically synonymous with this asshole.

I have to give him credit though, every student in that class will never forget that a revolver will shoot through a purse.

If you are in the market for safe and knowledgeable instruction check us out at Valkyrie Defense Group. You can find us online or on Facebook. Like our page to keep up to date on our rapidly growing training schedule. While on Facebook swing by and give the blog a like too. I would really appreciate it.

Question of the day, have you ever witnessed an instructor do something incredibly stupid or give some horrible advice? Let me know on Facebook or in the comments section below.

Everyone has that one gun that just sits in the gun safe, it never gets shot because there is something about it you don’t like. It also holds just enough sentimental value that you can’t bring yourself to sell it for one reason or another. Maybe you won it at a raffle, or it was a gift from a well meaning spouse, or like in my case it is your first ever handgun.

I have never been really called the sentimental type but when it comes to my Smith and Wesson Sigma 40 cal I just can’t bring myself to sell it. I won it at a NWTF Banquet about 6-7 years ago and was excited to bring my first handgun home. I slowly came to the realization that the Sigma was one of the worst handguns I ever fired.

If you aren’t familiar with the Sigma it was S&W’s first attempt at a striker fired pistol to compete with the Glock 17 and needless to say it really missed the mark. The Sigma features a truly atrocious double action trigger since it was marketed towards police departments who were transitioning over from revolvers to newer semi autos.

I enjoyed my sigma until I started getting into shooting handguns more and experiencing other pistols then I started to realize there was a lot left to be desired. After the 11-12 pound trigger the next problem I have with my Sigma is that it is a 40cal. There was no way for me to shoot the gun effectively or efficiently when I was having trouble holding onto it after every shot.

Even though I really hate shooting the gun I just can’t bring myself to part with it so I decided that there are probably quite a few other guys out there that are in the same boat. While surfing pictures on Facebook on day I came across a picture of a Sigma with a wicked stipple job and I started joking back and forth with the company about polishing a turd. It dawned on me after our exchange that I now knew what it wanted to do, I want to try a little experiment and see if we can find a way to fall back in love with our guns that we view as ugly step kids.

In this series I will address some of the main issues I have with the Sigma that keeps me from wanting to use it more. Everyone I have ran the idea by has thought it was a good idea so I hope it is as well received with all the readers. Stay tuned for some fun we are going to have using my Sigma as the test dummy.

Valkyrie Defense Group is proud to announce that we are making our new home at Fresno Gun Club in Coshocton Ohio. We are excited to see all the doors and opportunities this opens to us.

We have had a lot of interest in advanced pistol classes in the last 6 months and have been waiting to set any dates or make any promises until we found the proper place to hold these types of classes The club features two classrooms, indoor rimfire range, and outdoor rifle shotgun and pistol ranges.

We are busy working on getting some new classes written up to go along with our already popular CHL class. By the time weather breaks we are hoping to have the details ironed out. If you have any specific areas you would like to see featured in our classes let us know. We are here to put on the best class we can for our students and give them what they want.

March dates are pretty filled up and warmer weather is approaching. Our first class at our new location will be on March 16. If you are interested in any of our classes please contact us as soon as you can to reserve your date. You can click the Valkyrie Defense tab above and see all the ways to contact us. I am fairly certain that dates will be going quickly as soon as people see the grass getting greener. We have dates in April open still as of now.

Finally I think my brain has recovered from the 20+ hours I spent in the classroom over the weekend enough for me to sit down and really put some thoughts out there for my readers. If you notice I didn’t put review in the title. I don’t think a review would do this class justice. That would be like me saying I want to write a review for my first time skydiving. It is an experience. I can describe it to you and give you brief points about it here and there but I believe everyone’s experience leaving a MAG-20 will be different which is why I will only give you my final thoughts on it. That may sound strange for most people but until you take the class you won’t truly understand.

The class was held in Twinsburg Ohio and was hosted by Paul Carlson and Safety Solutions Academy. The class was held at the Hilton Garden Inn in one of their conference rooms. It was very convenient to come right down from the room and not have to go anywhere plus the staff kept the coffee, tea, water, and Chex Mix coming.  For this type of class it was a great fit. The conference room was the perfect size to host 22 students and all the audio video equipment. We had a little problem with a DVD player at the end of day one but Paul sorted it out and everything was ready to go by the second day. (By the way keep your eyes on the Safety Solutions Podcast for a post class interview between Paul and Mas)

After we got settled in on Friday I posted up a little info on the Citizen’s Rules of Engagement class so you can check out the links there. Class started at 8:30 on the dot Saturday with a brand new ball point pen and from that moment on it was massive amounts of knowledge being tossed into your face. The weekend ended with a dead ball point pen and 38 pages of hand written notes. The amount of information was amazing.

Now I know you are sitting there wanting me to start into what information was covered and give a good outline of the class. As I started todays post I said this is an experience and everyone gets something different out of it. I walked away from this class realizing that everyone that takes carrying a gun seriously needs to take this class for the simple fact that nobody teaches every stage of an encounter as well Massad Ayoob.

Let’s think about the three sides of an armed encounter real quick. First you have the pre event, the moments leading up to the fight of your life. Next is the fight. Finally we have the post encounter. The MAG-20 class covers all three stages of the event in serious depth. You might survive the encounter only to loose your life in court afterwards because you were sufficiently prepared to handle the aftermath. So many people out there teach for the events leading up and even more teach the how to fight portion, but nobody teaches the after the shoot like Mas.

Obviously there are aspects of the class that are respectfully asked to keep off the internet and I will not be the one to break that trust. I will say for those who are planning on taking a MAG-20 that I felt very prepared from reading some of Massad’s books. One of the most beneficial ones in my opinion was “In the Gravest Extreme”  which is a relatively short read with a ton of information.

Again I think that everyone serious about carrying a gun in self-defense needs to take this class. This class packs so much information into the 20 hours that it feels like you are drinking from a fire hose. The one surprising thing I walked away with is looking at the value of life in a new whole new light. I realized that often when you are busy looking for bad things you sometimes miss the good things in life. I realized also why I carry a gun everyday. The gun isn’t just for me, it is for everyone that depends on me. I owe it to my family to be here for them. I’m no good to them if I am a fancy box six feet under the ground. I am also not any good if I’m in a jail cell because I didn’t know how to properly handle the aftermath of defending my life. That reason is exactly why I feel this class was worth every cent and that everyone who carries a gun needs to take this class.

If you have never heard of the Friends of the NRA you are missing out. Since it’s inception, The Friends of the NRA has had over 16,000 events, reached over 2.8 million attendees, and raised over $230 million through its wildly-successful fundraising program for The NRA. The money raised goes towards projects aimed at youth shooting programs, women’s programs, range services, education & training, hunter safety services, and The National Firearms Museum. A large part of the money will stay in the community it was raised in.

I am proud to say that I sit on the committee for Coshocton’s first ever Friends of the NRA banquet. All the counties surrounding Coshocton have their own committees and banquets to raise funds to help their county’s interests and now finally Coshocton  has their chance.

The Coshocton event will be held on April 4th and the doors will open at 5:00 pm. I can say that there will be no dull moments between the raffles, auction, and the amazing dinner that everyone is in for. Tickets are $30 and that includes your dinner. The raffles will consist of a coin game, a knife game, an ammo can game, and the standard Friends of the NRA WALL OF GUNS raffle. One other raffle that I am super excited about is called the Mystery Safe. Here is what is cool about this, the winner will receive a 45 gun safe worth well above $1000 dollars MSRP and inside that safe will be 2 guns. This is just an example of what kind of prizes you could walk away with.

The committee is also doing many pre-event raffles. We are raffling off 30 Glocks, a Ruger 1911, and various other raffles AS WELL AS A PRE-EVENT MYSTERY SAFE!!! That’s right we aren’t just giving away one safe with two guns we are giving 2. Only 50 tickets on the pre sale will be sold so if you are interested you need to move quickly. You can message me or contact the committee chairman HERE.

Of course I will be at the event making the rounds so if you would like to meet me in person this will be a perfect chance and you will be helping out a great cause! Again if you have any questions please feel free to contact me or the committee chairman HERE. You can also buy your dinner tickets online and as an incentive to buy your tickets early there is a free raffle for one of two handguns called the Early Bird Raffle for the first 200 dinner tickets sold. All you have to do is buy your ticket sooner than later.

Please share this with your friends and family. We would love to make the first ever Coshocton Friends of the NRA banquet a successful one so please help me get the word out. I would love to see everyone there and meet some of my readers from the Ohio area so jump on and get your ticket. Maybe if we get a good group we can even head out for a sit down and a beer afterwards. I hope to see you there!

Massad Ayoob has taught and instructed firearms and self-defense longer then I have been alive so when I heard he was being hosted by Safety Solutions Academy in Ohio I jumped at the chance.

Paul Carlson said it best how he describes the class.

“The class is a 20 hour immersion course that will help you, the law abiding armed citizen, understand and apply the legal issues, tactical issues and aftermath management of a self-defense scenario where you are forced to use lethal force in defense of your self or others.”

After you use the gun to defend you life is the wrong time to start thinking about what to do next. Everyone that I have heard that took the class has said it has changed the way they looked at carrying a gun. I am eager to bring back my take on the class over then next few days. I am expecting to be running on fumes by Sunday but I plan on putting updates onto the Facebook page throughout the weekend so if you haven’t liked it make sure you do so to keep up on what direction the discussion is going.
