I think I have touched on it once before about my ultimate detest for Piers Morgan. He recently had a legal counselor come onto his show to grill him over the fact that the organization raised $12,000 dollars for George Zimmerman to assist with purchasing another firearm along with acquiring ammunition and training. I usually enjoy watching Piers taking a pounding from all pro-gun advocates so I decided to sit down and watch. Unfortunately, Mr. Hanson didn’t knock it out of the park but still stood his ground very well. Piers loves to use dramatic words and hypotheticals to get an emotional response out of his guests and Ken was unaffected and stuck to his obvious well thought out argument. Here is the clip from the show…..

More news about the Buckeye Firearms Association came out this week when their website was hacked in an obvious retaliation for raising the money to help Mr. Zimmerman. The problem was quickly solved and none of the donor information was lost or stolen.

It gives me great joy to finally bring to my readers what has gone on behind the scenes for so long now. Valkyrie Defense Group is now up and running. “What is this Valkyrie Defense Group?” is what I am sure you are asking yourself now. I want to take this post today to fill everyone in on what we are, what we intend to do, and why it has kept me from writing as much as I want.

Valkyrie Defense Group (VDG) was thought up by a very good friend and myself when talking about the lack of good training options in our area. We saw a need for that next step beyond the concealed handgun class. We see the Ohio Concealed Handgun License class as only a starting point, not an ending point, in Ohioan’s quest to becoming a properly trained concealed carry holder. All too often we were hearing horror stories from people claiming the Concealed Carry class was only 5 hours (when it is a mandatory 12) or that they were in a class with 30-50 and even heard staggering numbers over 100. We saw a need for proper quality training where people can go and get the attention that they need in a safe, knowledgeable environment. BAM!! Valkyrie Defense Group was born.

There are obviously many companies out there trying to cash in on the 1 million plus new gun owners, so what sets us apart from those companies? It is our mission to make sure every student leaves more knowledgeable and more skilled than when they showed up to whatever class it is they are taking from us. In order for us to do that we are not looking for classrooms full of 25-30 students. We are happier to have 6 exceptionally trained students leave our classroom than 60 uneducated, irresponsible ones. It is with that attitude we approach every class and strive to make sure all the needs of every student are met to their satisfaction and ours.

As I said, this company was a brainchild of a dear friend of mine and me and as of now we are the sole instructors. We are able to offer an extensive military background point of view along with the just as important civilian aspect and point of view. My partner and good friend Jason Groves is a NRA pistol Instructor, a Self-Defense Inside the Home instructor,  as well as a United States Marine. Jason was assigned as a Reconnaissance Scout for the 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion. Jason also served in the Marine Security Forces and held multiple billets in a dedicated security and anti-/counter-terrorism unit. With his very extensive background, he brings a ton of experience and knowledge to VDG and I am proud to call him a true friend. Jason is a great teacher and has ways to explain and show different techniques, which is rare in most run-of-the-mill trainers and instructors today. Combine that with is excellent military service, he is a great asset to VDG.

Other than what you can get out of my about page there is not much more to add. I too am an NRA Pistol instructor and have taken roughly 50 hours of advance pistol training this year alone with more already scheduled before the year is up. It is my goal to draw as much of the knowledge that I can from the many outlets I study, along with the advanced classes I attend, and bring it to my students and readers. I come from a large family full of teachers and it seems to have rubbed off on me. I take the title of instructor very serious and hold it to a very high standard and I do my best to deliver the best advice and knowledge I can each class. With no prior military experience, I feel it is my duty to study harder, teach better, and shoot perfect every class or I feel I have let my students down.

Seeing that we are just getting started, and still on the ground level of our business plan for Valkyrie Defense, we are hoping to be adding some more instructors to the roster in the future. When we do, you can be certain that each person that bears the title of “VDG Instructor” will have the same dedication to delivering top-notch performance and knowledge in the classroom and on the range to our students.

The list of classes offered now are limited to pistol. We are ready and willing to teach Ohio Concealed Handgun classes now along with our own advanced pistol class we have titled VDG Pistol 1. (VDG Pistol 2 is in the works also) By next year, we will be looking to expand to rifle and shotgun, but for now we want to focus on perfecting the business and making sure that each person that chooses to take a class with us gets the most out of it.

We will be based out of central Ohio, but are always willing to travel. As I said earlier, we are not concerned with large number of students, if you have at least 6 people attending, we will hold a class. If you have a safe place to shoot and adequate space for a classroom setting, we will also be willing to come to you. If you are a substantial distance away, call us and we will work something out. We are tossing around the idea of holding a VDG Pistol 1 class in Missouri before the end of the year, but we will make that announcement after more plans have been hashed out.

In closing, I want to again say that we created Valkyrie Defense Group because we saw an apparent gap in what training many people are receiving for concealed carry and what we feel is necessary. Basic concealed carry classes give you the ability to carry a gun to defend your life,  and we want to make sure you have the knowledge and skills if that time ever comes. We plan on offering the best instructors and classes to prepare you for that life or death situation whether it lasts 3 seconds, 30 seconds or 3 minutes.

I encourage you to visit the Valkyrie Defense Group Facebook page and give us a like. The VDG website is currently under construction and we are working hard to get the lights on over there so you can get better class descriptions, more in depth bios on all the instructors, along with some photos of our recent classes. While you are clicking around, make sure you head over to the Absolute BS Facebook page and give me a like there also. I hope to see you on the range soon and in one of our classes. If there are any questions at all you can contact me with the contact tab at the top or on either of the afore mentioned Facebook pages. I look forward getting back into the flow of writing more now that a lot of the administrative stuff to get VDG off the ground is finishing up. Thanks for sticking around in my spurts of absence.

The anti-gun side is always so bitter. They know they are fighting a losing battle at every turn. All the facts are on our side so they are stuck with making up their own and using emotion to tug at the heartstrings of the ill-informed. Being on the losing side of an argument all the time makes people desperate, and when people get desperate they do two things…..

racist proud plant

They buy hideous glasses and go to the opposition’s rallies and hold racist signs all while trying to incite some form of violence.

Classy right? I would like to introduce Renee Vaughn, a Lefty environmentalist who proceeded to shout “We’re racist. We’re proud. We’re better ‘cuz we’re white.”  Really? That is the best you could come up with? I guess all community activists can’t eventually make it to the White House.

It didn’t take long for the pro-Zimmerman side to catch on and have this horrible leftist plant figured out but not before she actually did make the rounds on some news sites. There is no such thing as fair play anymore. Like bringing Martin’s family to Capitol Hill to hold a few hour summit with a Democrat only audience.  Seems a lot like when the Sandy Hook parents caught a ride on Air Force One in order to make it to D.C. just to make an appearance before a hot button Senate vote on gun control.

We need to keep our eyes and ears open and make sure we point out the obvious trolls, not just at Martin-Zimmerman rallies, but also at pro-gun rallies. If someone is really acting to the extreme and is standing out in an obvious attempt to get some media attention point them out to someone in charge. There is a good possibility that they are up to no good anyway.

Head over to Facebook and give me a like then swing by Shooters Legion and say hello over there.

The reprehensible George Zimmerman finally came out of hiding today to look for another minority to gun down but his plans were thwarted by a rolled over SUV with a family of 4 trapped inside. So George does what any mainstream media super villain would do…. he saved them? Wait, wait, wait, so George Zimmerman might actually be a good guy? Yup. On the contrary to the way the mainstream has painted this guy he selflessly helped a family trapped after a vehicle rollover accident.

Obviously my first sentence is heavily saturated with sarcasm. I haven’t said much about the trial mainly because it was what everyone was talking about and I didn’t want to add to the ever going commentary on the matter. If you want some of the best coverage you can find on the subject you need to head over to Legal Insurrection. They have been my go-to for all the info surrounding the trial.

I do want to add that if anyone attending the pro-Trayvon marches and rallies think that the Black Panthers, Jessie, Al, Obama, or Holder (mainly all your typical racial pot stirrers) were hoping for a guilty verdict, you are bat shit crazy. These men are set to make piles and piles of money off the downtrodden and oppressed they claim to represent. Over 100 rallies are planned, speeches are being booked, and money is being donated to “the cause.” I just thought I needed to toss that in there in case someone who normally wouldn’t read my posts runs across this article because of my tongue-in-cheek title. Oh and btw you aren’t alone. You should be happy to know that Iran is on your side. Congrats!

We could cover how the Department of Justice had put a hold on all the evidence making it impossible for George to get his Keltec back.

Or how our president somehow thinks that a Harvard graduate and a crack smoking wannabe gangster are somehow similar 35 years ago.

Or maybe even touch on Holders speech to the NAACP about “Stand Your Ground Laws.”

Or touch on the multiple death threats a gun store owner has received for just mentioning that he would help Zimmerman out with getting a new gun.

But obviously those  are already over-done, so the only thing for me to do is just close this out and ask you that you head over to the Facebook page and give me a like. There are plenty of pictures and conversation to be had. Also, stand by for a pretty cool announcement coming in the next week or two. I hinted at it awhile ago but things were slowed down by forces outside my control which is another reason I have been absent more than I would like lately. Thanks for reading and stopping by. If you have an idea on an article you would like me to write or questions you can contact me at the Facebook page, there is also a contact tab at the top, or you can simply email me at Absolutebsblog@gmail.com. I would love to hear from you.

It is always the best way to troll a firearms forum. Start a thread about why any specific caliber is the greatest and you are going to end up 50+ pages of arguing and comments like “If the caliber don’t start with 4 it ain’t worth carrying.” I am not saying I enjoy doing this, I am simply stating that I have seen it too many times. There are many factors in choosing a specific caliber to depend your life on and there are so many factors that contribute to this choice that need to be considered when choosing. This is by no means me pushing my choices upon you. This is simply me laying out the factors and conclusions as to why I landed on the 9mm being the best round for me. You might find some of my conclusions to be the true to your situation and it might make you reconsider your caliber of choice.

The idea for this article came from a talking with a friend who reads the blog. He was asking me what brand ammo I carry and why, eventually that lead straight into talking caliber and performance. What we need in a defensive carry round is for the round to go deep enough into the target to find something important, and secondly it needs to expand and cause a sufficient amount of damage to stop the threat as quickly as possible.

Expansion of the bullet after hitting a target is very critical. In this day and age with the huge advancements in bullet technology, manufacturers are able to produce we are not seeing much of a difference in calibers from 9mm – 45 cal. Ten years ago we were seeing 45 cal. rounds expanding out to .7″ and that was pretty much the bees knees at the time. Now it isn’t uncommon to find ballistic tests with modern 9mm round expanding .6-.7  inches.  I am not trying to say there is zero difference between the 9 and the 45 but anymore there is less of a difference between the two. So what other factors are there that sets the 9mm above all in my choice of carry?

If you follow Absolute BS on Facebook it is pretty obvious that I spend a lot of time at the range and I do as many classes as funds will allow.  I feel it is also essential you train how you fight. The more I can save on ammo costs, the more I can put towards classes and extra range time making myself more proficient. The 9mm allows me to do just that. Being substantially cheaper than both 40 and 45 both through the ammo drought and before it is again coming out on top for me.

Another large factor in my choice was my ability to control recoil. My split times in some of the drills I talked about in earlier posts are around .22-.25 sec with my Glock 19. When I step up to larger defensive calibers I am nowhere near that split. In a self-defense situation, the ability to deliver more shots on target in a shorter amount of time is very important.

Ammunition capacity is the last factor that lead me to choose the 9mm for myself over other calibers. I am a Glock shooter so lets compare the full size Glocks and their capacity.

As you can see there is a substantial difference in capacity between all 3 calibers. Another point to make is that even though the 9mm’s capacity is the greatest fully loaded it still weighs less than either of the other contenders.

All these reasons are why I choose the 9mm. I am in no way trying to tell you the 9mm is the best (but I do make a pretty good argument for it) for all defensive handguns. It is a personal choice and if you look at all the factors and are willing to give up ground in some areas then that is your choice.

Hit me up on Facebook and Shooters Legion and let me know what you carry and why. I am trying to get back into the swing of writing every night so hang with me.

I’m back and I brought with me another quick DIY project. I got this idea from my instructor class, one of the other students made these target stands for the shooting portion. I will be needing some extra stands in the future so I took some time to throw these together.

I picked up all the materials to make two complete stands at the local hardware store and walked out spending $30.45 total.

The materials needed to complete one stand are…

  • 10′ PVC pipe 1.5″ diameter
  • 4 – 90° elbow 1.5″
  • 2 – Tee fitting 1.5″

Tools required…

  •  Tape measure
  • Hacksaw or skill saw
  • Marker or pen
  • Glue (optional)

We first will start by taking the 10′ PVC pipe and cutting it into sections. You will need:

4 – 12″
2 – 16″
2 – 20″

If you cut right you should use the entire 10′ section with none left over. These lengths can be adjusted to your preferences. I am weird and don’t like to waste much of anything or have extra materials.

Here is the lay out you will have after you make all your cuts and lay out the elbows and tees.

Next we will take our 4 90° elbows and stick two to each end of the 16″ sections, and place them at the top and bottom similar to the picture above. Connect a 12″ piece to the other end of each elbows with one of the straight ends of the “T” pieces. Now finish it off by completing the rectangle with the open end of the “T” pieces pointing up. Finish off the stand by placing the remaining 20″ pieces of pipe into the open upward facing hole on the “T”‘s.

If you want to glue it together that is optional. I chose to only glue certain parts so the stands can be broken down and stored for travel.

2013-07-14_12-49-39_258

Finished, now all you need are 1″ furring strips, roughly 6′ tall to place inside the vertical holders to staple your targets to. This width will work with your standard IDPA target roughly 18″ to 18.5″ wide.

I hope you enjoyed this little DIY. It is a cheap alternative to some of the expensive metal stands out there and will be easier to break down and transport for you. Let me know how it works for you or send me a picture of you using your stand and I will be sure to share it on the Facebook page.

I received a Lee Precision Carbide 9mm 4 die set for Christmas last year to complement my new Dillon 550b. I had a little problem with it last week when I was loading some extra ammo for the START class. Up until then the dies have worked flawlessly as you would expect from a Lee product. The problem I met apparently is a common occurrence because Lee has now corrected the issue.

The decapper is made up of two separate parts, the rod, and the pin. The roller pin is seated inside the rod itself. The problem I ran into was and it seems a few others have run across is the pin getting stuck in the flash hole and being pulled back out of the rod. Leaving your die looking like this…

2013-06-25_20-58-20_135

And leaving the pin in the casing looking like this…

2013-07-01_07-24-29_854

I contacted Lee with their online warranty claim form and the next day had someone email me letting me know that it was taken care of and I had a new decapper on the way.

Apparently this is a common problem enough to force them to change the design from, a two piece as I described above, to a solid machined one piece. They seemed to have announced it in April of 2013 in their “Knowledgeables/FAQ” section.

Would I recommend this die set to anyone? Well it depends. Are they coming with a new decapper design or the old now? If you get a set with the old design can you return it right away for the new one? If there is no problem with returning it I don’t see why it should be a problem. Lee’s customer service was great they returned an email to me in less than 8 hours and no questions asked sent me a new rod free of charge. I feel it is a good die set for the money but they had poorly designed decapper where they are in the process of fixing. If they continue to replace them with out question I would say yes I recommend this set for the value and customer service from the manufacturer. If they start refusing to fix the flawed design or the customer service starts to fall off I will take back my recommendation and encourage people to choose a different brand.

Any thoughts or questions go ahead and send them to me with the contact form above or over on either Facebook or Shooters Legion.
