City looks to make gun ownership mandatory

A Georgia town is considering making owning a firearm mandatory.  I am of two mindsets on this.

Of course I am all for making “personal” security and “personal” defense “personal” again. I feel we need to encourage people to stop relying on first responders to save them. Lets face it, WE are the first responders. The police are the people who show up 10 minutes later to take names and fill out the reports. The majority of incidents are over and done with by the time police show up to a scene. Am I complaining about that and saying they aren’t doing enough? Absolutely not! I’m saying we are responsible for our own security and safety. The police do the best they can with the resources they have.

On the other hand, I don’t feel it is the governments right to impose laws forcing someone to do something they don’t want to do. I believe government should be as little out of our lives as possible. I choose to exercise my second amendment right daily. It is my right. But I also have friends that choose not to put that right to use and that too is their right. It is a slippery slope.

I am a staunch supporter of the 2nd amendment and encourage people frequently to exercise their constitutional right but this is a bad idea. Almost as bad as a city like Chicago banning handguns. Government has no more right to tell people what they must own than they do to tell them what they can’t own. A slippery slope indeed.

  2. There are plenty of people I wouldn’t want ever owning a gun, most of whom have poor eyesight. This is obviously a silly, knee-jerk over-reaction.

Age has no bearing on constitutional rights. If someone has a lisp are we going to tell them their first Amendment rights are void? A blind man has the same rights as a man with perfect vision. If a person chooses not to exercise a particular right voluntarily that is his choice and the government should have no way means to force them to do so.

As much as it sucks to say it, I believe that most American’s these days are zombies. Meaning they won’t do anything unless someone tells them to. Usually these experiments end up working out since it has been done before with great success. It has never been enforced and the crime rate took a dive. I agree with your commend that big government needs to end, but at the same time you sometimes need to fight fire with fire or else you risk government lighting the magazine. (Old ship reference)
